Never Played Before? Beginner Basketball in Regina, Start to Finish
The whole beginner path in one place, written for the parent whose child has literally never played.

- Book a Beginner session, not an Advanced one. Every age band has both.
- Beginner means new to the game or one to two years in. Nobody is expected to know anything.
- Eight players a session, so a first-timer is coached rather than carried.
- There is no season to wait for: if a session has space this week, you can start this week.
If your child has never played, the hardest part is not the basketball. It is signing up for something when you do not know what any of the words mean, and quietly worrying that everyone else's kid has been playing since they were four.
Here is the whole path, in order, with nothing assumed.
Step 1: pick the right room
Every age band at HoopLife runs two separate sessions, and picking the right one matters more than anything else you will decide:
- Beginner — for a child new to the game, or one to two years in. No experience needed at all.
- Advanced — for a child already playing school or club basketball.
Book Beginner. It is far easier to move a confident child up than to bring a discouraged one back.
By age: Young Stars for 3-6, Skills Training for 7-17, and Girls Only for girls 7-13 who would rather start in a gym that is just hers.
Step 2: know what the hour looks like
A beginner session is one hour, eight players, and it runs as a circuit rather than a lecture:
- Warm-up and ball handling — everyone has a ball and is moving inside two minutes.
- Skill blocks — shooting form, finishing with both hands, defending without fouling.
- Live play — every session finishes with real basketball.
Nobody is picked last, nobody sits out, and no drill assumes a skill your child has not been taught yet.
Step 3: pack four things
- Indoor, non-marking court shoes (the one item that really matters)
- Athletic clothing
- A labelled water bottle
- A labelled basketball — and if you do not own one yet, we have spares. It is not a reason to stay home.
Arrive about ten minutes early the first time and check in at the front desk. The waiver was signed during online registration, so there is no paperwork at the door. Full detail: what to bring to a first practice.
What the first month actually looks like
Week 1. Overwhelming and fun. Your child will remember one drill and the coach's name. That is a good week 1.
Week 2. Slightly less nervous. Usually the week a kid decides whether this is theirs.
Week 3. Something clicks — a layup on the correct foot, a shot that goes in during live play.
Week 4. They start asking about a ball for the driveway.
Four coached hours is enough to change what a child believes about themselves. It is not enough to make them good, and no honest gym will tell you otherwise.
What comes after the first month
Two doors, and plenty of families take both:
- Keep the weekly session and add ten minutes a day at home. The drills that need no hoop are here.
- Add a season — the HoopLife League has no tryout and nobody is cut, so a four-week beginner can join a real team with real games. Grades 1-4 play 3x3, grades 5 and up play officiated 5v5.
A camp on the next school break is the other easy on-ramp, especially with a friend.

Frequently asked questions
Does my child need to know how to play before their first session?
No. Beginner sessions are for children new to the game or one to two years in, and no drill assumes a skill they have not been taught.
What if my child is the only beginner?
They will not be. Beginner sessions are a separate room from Advanced, so everyone there is at a similar stage.
Can a beginner join the league?
Yes. There is no evaluation or tryout and nobody is cut. Divisions are grouped by age and ability.
How soon can we start?
As soon as a session has space. Weekly sessions run every week of the year, so there is no season to wait for.
Not sure where your kid fits?
Leave your name and email and a HoopLife coach will help you work it out. Or start with the $10 Get Started package: a planning meeting with a Director plus their first session.
