BOOST Kids

Money should never be the reason a kid cannot play. BOOST pairs a Regina family who is having a hard time with a local business that pays for their child's whole year at HoopLife. Anyone can apply, and it costs the family nothing.

What BOOST Kids is

A local business, and a kid who needs one

BOOST is our program for low-income and at-risk kids, and for families who are going through a hard stretch. A Regina company covers a child's full year at HoopLife, and that child trains, plays and grows up in this building like everybody else. Anyone can apply. We cannot take everyone, so we put the kids with the greatest need first.

What a BOOST Kid gets

Three things, for a whole year

Every BOOST Kid gets the same package. No tiers, no partial memberships.

A year-long HoopLife membership

Training every week of the year at the HoopLife Centre, plus camps and leagues. Not a trial, not a month. The whole year, paid for.

School support

Help staying on top of school, because none of the basketball matters if that part slips. We keep an eye on it and step in when we need to.

The mentorship program

Coaches who know their name, expect something of them and are still there next season. For most BOOST Kids this is the part that actually changes things.

How it works

From the form to the floor

Four steps, and we will tell you where you are at every one of them.

1

You apply

Fill in the form on this page. It asks about your household and about your child. Take your time on the two written parts, they are the ones a sponsor reads.

2

We read every application

Our team goes through all of them and looks at household income, financial hardship and what is going on at home. Nobody is screened out by a computer.

3

We find your child a sponsor

We take your child's story to the local businesses who fund BOOST and match them with one. This is the part that takes the longest, and it depends on how many companies are sponsoring at the time.

4

They start at HoopLife

Once they are matched they are in, for a full year, the same as every other kid in the building. Nobody in the gym knows who is a BOOST Kid unless you tell them.

Meet the kids

BOOST Kids, in their own stories

These are real kids who have come through BOOST, shared with their families' permission. Every one of them was somebody's application form once.

Brooklyn, a HoopLife BOOST Kid

Brooklyn

Brooklyn is driven and determined, takes charge as a leader and pushes everyone around her to be better. She loves sport, music and drama.

Brooklyn's mother Pamela has seven children. When her husband had to leave home she was left carrying all of it, working extremely hard just to keep the family going. Brooklyn wanted to play at HoopLife, and Pamela reached out to us for help.

BOOST gave Brooklyn the chance to play, to learn the game and to build the kind of character that shows up long after the season ends.

Zane, a HoopLife BOOST Kid

Zane

Zane is the fourth oldest of his siblings, full of spunk and very charismatic. He is strong in school and in sport, and he loves to volunteer, especially with younger children and kids with disabilities.

When Zane joined BOOST there were eight children in his household, six of them under sixteen. His mother was struggling to cover the necessities, and there was nothing left over for programs.

Through HoopLife, Zane built his confidence and found role models who are still in his life. He is now working towards college basketball.

Millie, a HoopLife BOOST Kid

Millie

Millie is the youngest of three girls. She is funny, kind and a very caring soul, and she loves animals, the outdoors, swimming and dancing. She watched her sisters play basketball and became their loudest fan before she ever picked up a ball herself.

Millie's mother is a single parent working full time while studying, and finding the time and the money for youth programs was a real struggle.

BOOST gave Millie a place to play every week, and gave her family one less thing to carry.

King, a HoopLife BOOST Kid

King

King is easy going, and basketball has completely taken hold of him. His first couple of years in Canada were a hard adjustment, and the gym is where he found friends and a sense of belonging.

King spent time away from his mom and their family in the past. They have been rebuilding since, while struggling financially.

Through BOOST, King is in the gym chasing a dream to make the NBA and be as great as his idol Kobe.

Success Stories

“Thank you to the sponsors that make it possible for kids to play the sports they love. I especially want to thank Hunter's sponsor. Without you, Hunter wouldn't have had the opportunity to train with the amazing coaches at HoopLife, and have access to a gym to work on his skills. This program and the coaches have taken Hunter under their wing and they treat him like family.”

Hunter's mom

BOOST Kids family

“The BOOST program has been a game changer for my son. As a single mom without family in Canada, the coaches and staff have been like an extended family for me and ZZ. The connections he has made have provided a sense of support and fun over the years. ZZ's confidence with basketball and life have grown thanks to HoopLife.”

BOOST Kids family

“Being accepted into the HoopLife BOOST program was such a blessing for our family. The opportunity to participate in all the HoopLife programs has been a dream come true for him. It has helped him develop critical skills. We are forever grateful to the HoopLife family for extending such generosity and inclusion to our family.”

“Zane is the exceptional person he is today because of the support, discipline and love that he has had throughout his years of basketball with HoopLife. Words cannot express with enough sincerity the appreciation I have for the kindness and generosity from those who sponsor BOOST, and for our support through HoopLife.”

Permission
Read the BOOST terms

I give permission for my child to take part in the HoopLife BOOST program, and for HoopLife to share my child's and family's story, birthday and name with a business or other people while looking for a sponsor. I give the HoopLife team permission to edit my application so it reads well for a sponsor. I understand my child may appear in a BOOST video series shared on social platforms. I will be a positive part of HoopLife and the BOOST program, and I understand that misconduct is grounds for ending our participation. I understand that HoopLife may seek emergency medical treatment on my behalf in the event of an injury, and that photographs and video may be taken during participation and used by HoopLife.

Thank you. Your application is in. We read every one, and we will be in touch.

For parents

Questions, answered

Who can apply?

Any family in Regina who cannot afford to put their child in basketball. That includes low-income households, families on government assistance, and families going through something hard right now. You do not need to prove anything to apply, and there is no cost to applying.

How are kids chosen?

Our team reads every application and looks at household income, financial hardship and what is happening at home. We prioritise the kids who need it most. We are honest about this: not everyone who applies gets a spot, because a spot only exists when a local business is funding one.

How many spots are there?

It depends entirely on how many businesses are sponsoring at that moment. Every BOOST Kid is paid for by one local company, so the program is exactly as big as our partners make it. Applications stay open all year and we work through them as sponsors come in.

What does my child actually do each week?

The same as every other member. Weekly training sessions with our coaches at the HoopLife Centre, plus camps and leagues through the year. Have a look at the sessions to see what a normal week looks like.

What does a BOOST Kid get?

A year-long HoopLife membership, school support, and the mentorship program. That is the whole thing, and it is the same for every BOOST Kid.

Does my child meet their sponsor?

Not necessarily in person. What we ask is that your child writes to their sponsor twice a year, with a short letter and a video about how the year is going. It teaches them to say thank you properly, and it is the part sponsors treasure.

Who sees our family's story?

Our team, and the business considering sponsoring your child. We may tidy up the writing so it reads well, and if your child is in a BOOST video we will always talk to you first. If there is something you do not want shared, say so in the form.

Will my child be treated differently in the gym?

No. Nobody in the building knows who is a BOOST Kid unless your family chooses to say so. They train with the same coaches, in the same groups, on the same floor.

What is expected of my child?

That they show up and make the most of it. Come to their sessions, work at it, and write the two thank-you letters a year. That is it.

How long does it take to hear back?

We will confirm we have your application, then it sits with us until we can match your child with a sponsor. That can be quick or it can take a while, depending on how many businesses are coming in. We will keep you posted either way.

I own a business. How do I sponsor a kid?

That side lives on the partners page. Short version: you cover one child's year, you are matched with them, you hear from them twice a year, and your company gets real recognition for it.

For businesses

Want to be the company that pays for one?

Every BOOST Kid on this page is here because a Regina business decided to cover their year. If that is something you want to do, the partnership side is on its own page.

The coaches are outstanding. They are knowledgeable, patient, and truly care about each child's development. They take the time to break down skills, encourage effort, and build confidence in every player... The training sessions are well organized and very effective... You can really see the improvement in skills, teamwork, and overall understanding of the game after just a few sessions... We are extremely happy with our experience and would highly recommend HoopLife Basketball Training to any family looking for a high-quality program where kids can learn, grow, and truly enjoy the game.

We signed up our 8-year-old son for the 3-month membership and have really enjoyed our experience. Logistically, I like that all the sessions are laid out in advance, so you can choose what works best for your schedule. It was a great experience for our son to have different coaches and play with different kids regularly. He really enjoyed the coaches! They were friendly, knowledgeable and really helped him to improve his skills. The facility itself is fantastic, and we're glad we gave this a shot!

Zane from Hooplife is such an amazing Coach. Our son, Keith, not just loves the sport, but he also loves the coaches. We feel very welcome and “at home”, there. They're very friendly to everyone. Also, the skills that they're teaching our son are very helpful for his development. Our son hopes to get accepted in a basketball club while training with HoopLife.
