Nobody ever got good only at practice
Every player who gets really good has hours nobody scheduled for them. Open gym is where those hours happen: shots up, pickup games, and working on the thing their coach told them about last week.
Their own time, on a real court
Getting shots up
Hardwood regulation court, a premium scoreboard, shot clocks and six adjustable hoops. The same floor our league plays on.
Playing pickup
Twenty people a session, so there is always a game and always room in it. Kids meet the players they end up on a team with.
Working on their game
Whatever they are trying to fix, this is where they put in the reps on it. No drills, no schedule, just the court.

What open gym looks like

Coached from a written playbook, not off the cuff
Open gym is free play on purpose: no whistle, no plan, just basketball. What makes ours different is what surrounds it. The kids on this floor train inside HoopLife's written coaching system all week, so the habits from the playbook show up in the pickup games, and a member can burn unlimited hours here putting their session work to use.
Off-ball movement
Your kid has the ball for a fraction of the game. We coach the rest of it: cutting, spacing, and getting open, so they matter on every possession.
Defence & communication
Positioning, help defence, closeouts, and talking on the floor. The loudest team usually wins, and we teach kids exactly what to say.
Creating advantages
Screens, handoffs and reads: how to beat a defender with your brain, not just your speed. This is the part most programs never teach.
Shooting form & shot selection
Clean mechanics and footwork, plus the judgment to know a good shot from a bad one. Both halves matter, so we coach both.
And the playbook is only half the promise. HoopLife exists to build confidence and success through basketball. Character, confidence and leadership are coached as deliberately as the jump shot, in every hour we run. The playbook makes them a better player; the coaching makes them believe it.
Open gym plus coaching is the combination
Open gym is where a player puts in their own work. Coaching every week is what turns that work into real skill. Our weekly training sessions and 3x3 sessions run every week of the year, and the same membership covers the credits for them and unlimited open gym on top.
When they want a team, a jersey and real officiated games, that is the HoopLife League. When school is out, that is camp.
Questions, answered
Is this real coaching, or supervised drills?
Real coaching. HoopLife runs on a written coaching library: practice plans organized around four training themes (off-ball movement, defence and communication, creating advantages, and shooting), with every drill diagrammed and every coach trained on the same playbook and the same basketball vocabulary. Nothing about the hour is improvised. And the skills are only half of it: character, confidence and leadership are coached just as deliberately, because building confidence and success through basketball is why HoopLife exists.
What does open gym cost?
It is free with any HoopLife membership, and $10 to drop in if you are not a member. Nothing else to buy.
Do I need to be a member?
No. Anyone can drop in for $10. Members just get in free, as many times a week as they like.
Does open gym actually matter, or is it just extra court time?
It is the difference between the kids who improve and the kids who stay the same. Think of a piano lesson: the lesson matters, but the teacher can always tell who practised between them. Their weekly session is the lesson, and open gym is where they practise. It is included in every membership at no extra cost, which is why the families who come consistently get the most out of it.
How many people are in the gym?
Each open gym holds 20, members and drop-ins alike, so there is always room to actually play rather than standing on the sideline waiting for a run.
When does it run?
Every week of the year. The weekly schedule shows every open gym time, and they run right through the summer.
What ages is it for?
All ages. It is the same court our sessions and league days run on, at the HoopLife Facility, 661 Solomon Cres.
Is it coached?
No — open gym is their own time on the court. If you want coaching, that is what the weekly training sessions are for, and the same membership covers both.
What should they bring?
A labelled basketball, a water bottle, indoor non-marking court shoes and athletic clothing. That is it.
What if the cost is a stretch for us right now?
We never want the cost to be the reason a child misses out on basketball. There is funding support available through BOOST Kids, and we will do what we can to help. Just ask.
