How a Regina Community Showed Up for Its Kids
More than 450 Regina kids played a HoopLife League season last year. This is what that actually looked like, and who paid for the parts families did not.

- More than 250 players registered for the winter season and 200 more in the spring.
- Harvard Western Insurance and Red River Mutual are the league's presenting sponsors.
- The league now runs three 10-week seasons a year: Fall, Winter and Spring.
- BOOST Kids covers a full year for families who cannot pay, funded by local businesses.
There is a moment at HoopLife that never gets old, and it is almost never during a championship. It is on an ordinary practice night, when a kid who walked into the gym unsure of themselves suddenly stands a little taller, calls for the ball, and starts encouraging a teammate.
We saw that a lot last season. Looking back on the year, one thing stands out above everything else: this league changes kids.
A year of basketball in Regina
Back-to-back seasons gave Regina youth an almost year-long chance to play. More than 250 players registered for the winter season, presented by Harvard Western Insurance and Red River Mutual. The spring season that followed brought in 200-plus more players and a lot of new families.
That is hundreds of kids in this city who spent the year in a gym, building friendships, learning the game and finding out what they are capable of. For some it was their first organised sport. For others it was the place they finally felt like they belonged.
More than basketball
Basketball is the vehicle. Growth is the destination.
On the court, kids learn to handle pressure, bounce back from a mistake, take coaching and lead other people. Those are the same skills that show up in a classroom, at home, and eventually in a workplace. Over a season we watched quiet kids become leaders and kids who had never played organised sport fall in love with the game.
That is why the league is not just games. Every night includes 30 minutes of on-court training and a Confidence, Leadership & Basketball IQ workshop with the player's own coach — a deliberate structure, not an add-on.
The partners behind it
A league of this size does not run on registration fees alone. Harvard Western Insurance and Red River Mutual came on as presenting sponsors because they wanted to invest in youth in this province, and their support is a large part of why the league can do what it does at the price it does.
They are not alone. A group of Regina businesses backs this gym in one form or another, and some of them fund BOOST Kids, the program where a local business pays for a child's full year at HoopLife when a family cannot. It costs the family nothing, anyone can apply, and nobody in the gym knows which players are BOOST Kids unless the family chooses to say so.
You can see everyone who supports this on our partners page.
What the league looks like now
The league has settled into a shape that works for families: one league, three 10-week seasons a year.
- Fall — starts the week school settles in and finishes before the Christmas break.
- Winter — the season that keeps a player sharp through the coldest months, when there is nowhere else to play.
- Spring — picks players up as their school season winds down, so nobody sits and waits until next fall.
Boys play in grades 1 through 12, girls in grades 1 through 8. Grades 1 to 4 play 3x3 on teams of six; grades 5 and up play officiated full-court 5v5 with referees and scorekeepers, three games a night so every player gets two full games. $450 a season, payment plans on request, and no tryout to attend — teams are formed by the head coach during the program.
The league is sanctioned by Basketball Saskatchewan and verified by Canada Basketball.
Thank you, and what is next
To every parent who drove across the city on a Tuesday night, every coach who stayed late, and every partner who wrote a cheque so a kid they will never meet could play: thank you. None of this happens without you.
The next season is already being built. If your child is not in it yet, the league page lists every division and the night it plays, and the $10 Get Started package is the easiest way to find out where they would fit.
